Playtop

Playtop® impact-absorbing playground surfacing is designed to minimise risks of injury to children who fall from play equipment. It is the most advanced product in its field.
After holding the UK market leadership for over 25 years, Playtop® is now marketed by trained and licensed installers in a growing number of other countries.
More than a million square metres of Playtop® have been installed worldwide.

Playing in Collaboration
Playtop Ltd. works internationally with Nike in its Reuse-A-Shoe programme. This innovative resource management initiative collects worn-out sports shoes of any brand, together with Nike manufacturing remnants, and separates materials for recycling.
Nike then works with partners such as Playtop® to incorporate Nike Grind rubber granulate into premium-quality sports and play surfaces.

Recycling Happiness
Playtop® is a continuous, porous material made from rubber granules and polyurethane binders. It is mixed and laid on site as wet-pour product. The base layer of coarse granules is made from rubber. The top layer consists of finer EPDM rubber granules, available in many bright, permanent colours.
Playtop® consists of two layers: a base layer of coarse (20 mm mesh) black granules made from rubber, and a coloured top layer of much finer EPDM rubber granules. These are intimately interlocked to give the surface its strength.

Steps towards Excellence
The installation of Playtop is divided into 4 categories.
• Assessing required thickness and areas
• Substructure specifications
• Additional tests
• Maintenance and repair

Assessing required Thickness and Areas
The play area is tested for various calculations, which defines the required thickness and fall height. The area is then installed with the surface that is recognised by international standards such as Europe’s EN 1176:1998 and EN 1177:1998, and America’s ASTM F1487-98 and F1292-99, in tandem with the CPSC Public Playground Safety Guidelines.

Substructure Specifications
Although Playtop® is installed as a packaged contract, some operators install the substructure themselves, leaving just the specialised work of mixing and laying the porous-rubber upper layer for Playtop®.

Additional Tests

In addition to the Critical Fall Height test specified by the European and American Standards, Playtop® has submitted to the four ancillary tests for playground surface specified by British Standards BS 7188:1998. Other countries have similar Standards. ‘The Centre for Sports Technology’ an independent specialist laboratory tested the mechanical performance of Playtop®.

Maintenance and Repair
With its continuous and joint less surface, Playtop® needs exceptionally little maintenance. Because the right thickness of material is always in the right place, no raking is needed nor the extra allowance of material required for bark or sand. Any foreign objects are clearly visible on the surface and cannot create hidden hazards beneath it. Additionally, there are no gaps to tempt inquisitive children or provide weak points for vandals. The surface itself is porous and if it is laid on a porous base, rainwater will drain away almost instantly.

Unmatched Safety
Playtop® surfaces give optimised deformation to cushion falls safety. The interlocked strength requires no separate structural base. The surface is resistant to abrasion, slipping, indention, and ignition. Moreover, the surface can be crafted into various creative designs.

Acquired Certifications
The impact-absorbing properties of Playtop® have been tested to both European and American Standards.
• European Test certificate (BSEN)
• American Test certificate (ASTM)
